Is this a thing in Japan, where parents abandon kids?
Every Japanese story that tried to take on the subject they depict the parents with compassion, that they love the kid, they just were overwhelmed. The kid is never mad at them for abandoning them and it is always justified one way or another.
It is super weird.

Just the fact that the mother have the audacity to tell the sub mother that she loves the kid and just because she is getting married and will have another kid she realized how important children are is like slap in the face for the first kid. Lady you didn't see the kid for over 10 years, you know shit about her and there is no love in your vocabulary.
Idk man this movie thinks it is some uplifting story but I feel bad for the young lady and despise the mother for making the kid start her life in hard mode

fake one • 1 year ago

I don't think the mother was forgiven here, though.. at least by the kid.
And the movie is uplifting in the sense that both of them(nikuko and kikurin) were able to overcome their differences/insecurities over the movie and get closer as a real(:D) family

But yeah, the Japanese do be makin some crazy oyako shit

i dont think this problem is just happening in japan, the fact that a lot of women who are working at that line are bound to have unwanted pregnancy because of lack of sex ed or proper usage of protections. Though a lot chose the abortion side. and in my country where abortion remained illegal, a lot of these "traditional" techniques to abort a child is rampant and will also cause damage to the women. all these abandonment issue you've talk is about the psychological circumstances a women would have if she is having a child where one doesnt know how to take care of it (i think the fact that she actually let nikuko took care of her child was good since we could see that kikuko was pretty contented by it and was actually happy), she could've suffered more if she stayed with her mom with zero knowledge of parenting
idk, this is just how i interpreted things, but i understand what you mean though

Kamiko • 1 year ago

A child is not meant to be raised by one parent. That's what a lot of people fail to realize and when they finally come to this reality some of them chicken out and abandon the kid or bear with it because of what people might say but then puts all their frustration on the kid either verbally or physically. People need to realize the whole family structure is there for a reason and outside of that there's bound to be problems down the road. Of course there's also rare exceptions to it all

InfiniteValour • 1 year ago

Nah man abondoned children happen all over the world. Japan is one of the better ones already. You should go and look into India and Africa if you think it's common in Japan. Plus hypothetically speaking, if I'm still living and I did not suffered any abused and was only abandoned by someone who was so overwhelmed and young, I would not be angry. It's like someone working at your company and they prove to be very incompetent and sloppy. The person wants the job and money, but does not have the self-discipline to do what it nessessary to be done, so as the boss, i would just fired that person. You could of course get angry at the peprson. i just felt no need to be angry for someone that have their own trials and tribulations unrelated to me, but to each their own. So the kid was mature enough to not get angry, was understantable towards the parent's flaws, and did not forgive nor hold a grudge.

Japan, as well as many other societies, and heck individual people have a very differing take on morals and society. There's also a general loss of philosophy, virtue and moral happening overall. In Japan, since old days, and until today, there was, and is a great respect of hierarchy - even if someone's a little older than you and/or higher in social standing (today that's less relevant but before it was really crazy) you're automatically inferior to them in a sense. This goes for parents too. You'll see this ideology in most places in the world where parents can get away with a lot of shit because they're either the parents or they did it 'for the child's good' but in Japan its especially extreme because there's that layer of status superiority on top. Additionally, Japan has a thing with defamation laws that you can't 'ruin a person's (or a company/corporation) good name', even if they're guilty of a crime and where proven to be guilty, even a horrible one, which developed Japanese culture in a way they don't tend to badmouth and blame people for stuff a lot even if they absolutely deserve it. So no, its not 'a thing' but the way Japanese society works is kind of different, and by different i mean kind of shitty. If you want another example of this, look no further than fate heaven's feel, where Sakura pities her RAPIST brother, meanwhile her father that gave her off to be fucking eaten/infused/raped by bugs and the grandpa that actually did the act also try to be portrayed as at least partially good/positive/reasonable characters... Its quite a fucked up culture.

It takes real strength to forgive and raise the child of the person who ran out on them when its their responsibility to begin with. The daughter doesn't forgive her either out-right, just accepts it even if she is bitter deep down but comes to terms with it. Mad respect to both the characters for over-coming their hurdles together

Well, I mean, we saw all movie just how softhearted Nikuko is so I'd be very surprised if any other option even briefly occurred to her. And yeah I liked Mitsuji's character, you grow up fast in the countryside.

This is VERY Japanese, but the art is very detailed and the ending is emotionally sweet. The most day in the life you can possibly get with some high notes and low notes.

Did she peregenant in the end?? I'm confused because she still look young.

Cheese • 1 year ago

She got her first period

Yamamoto Takeshi • 1 year ago

Her period cycle started, so it's her first one

Xyrus • 1 year ago

that is funny lmfao well I guess that's understandable cause your a man, I am too BTW but I get it. She mentioned period halfway of the story, she said that most of the girls in her class start wearing bras cause of period but then she said she don't want to have a period, I thought it is a an important detail and this ending proves it I guess. Actually when she shout inside the bathroom the first thing I think is she's pregnant lol but I remember that she said her stomach hurt so it is period and they pointed out the red mochi (is it called?).
I think the fact that she's happy to have a period is an important detail cause like I mentioned she don't want to have one at first, maybe it is the fact that she fears to grow up but having all of these events, she started to accept it instead.

Great animation, good story - except some weird parts, like Kikuko paying off her boyfriend debts. It seems that is quite common in Asia to force a child, a parent, a lover, or someone close to the person who has borrowed money, to pay for that debt... still weird.
